What is the Sydney Pennant?

The Sydney Pennant is an opportunity for you to play for a norths Squash Club team against teams from other local squash clubs on weekday evenings. There are 2 Pennants per year, Autumn Pennant commencing in February and Spring Pennant commencing in August. Half of the games are held at our home courts and half at other clubs courts within the Northern District. All these courts are within 15km of norths, which is the most southerly, to Thornleigh in the north and Elanora in the north-east.

Teams are generally made up of 5 or 6 players, with 4 playing each match night.

Games are scored to 15 with each rubber being the best of 5 games, using the 'point a rally' system.

Team scores are accumulated over 15 weeks with the following 2 weeks seeing 1st, 2nd & 3rd positions playing in the Semi and Grand-Final events.

There are generally around 15 divisions in the pennant graded according to SportyHQ (www.sportyhq.com). To start, first time players receive an approximate rating which determines which team you will play in and your position within the team. Your rating is then automatically adjusted, according to your results, after each match you play.

Traditionally there were separate Men's and Women's divisions, however teams are now mixed.

It costs $70 for Squash Club members to be part of a team for the competition (or $25 to reserve in a team). To play in the Sydney Pennant, you also need to join SportyHQ which costs $60 per annum (payable directly to SportyHQ). In previous years, this fee has been paid by the club.

An added bonus is the social aspect as, after each match the home team will provide supper and drinks.

Winning Pennant Team Photos

Please note that to have your picture of a winning pennant team displayed, the team needs to do 2 things:

• 1. To display it on the norths Squash Facebook page, send an electronic copy to clubreporter@northssquash.com

  2. To display it on the ‘Wall of Fame’ at the courts, supply a norths Squash Club committee member with a printed photo and the names of your team members printed on the template. The inside of the picture frame is 20x25 cm, so the picture needs to be smaller. In the example photo of a winning team, the picture is 20 x 13cm.
